Maintaining public trust

Every day, ExxonMobil serves the energy needs of millions of people around the globe. We succeed in this important role by maintaining public trust. To keep this trust, we strive to be a leader in corporate citizenship by operating with the highest integrity, maintaining a steadfast commitment to safety, health and environmental protection, and playing a positive role in the global community.

Safety, health and environment
Nothing is more important than the safety and health of our employees, our contractors, and the people who live and work in and around our operations. Our goal is an accident-free workplace where “Nobody Gets Hurt.”

Over the past decade, ExxonMobil has consistently outperformed the petroleum industry in safety. In fact, 2002 was the safest year in our 121-year history.

Our Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) provides a framework for managing safety as well as the environmental risks inherent in our business. It is designed to help drive the number of operational incidents as close to zero as possible. Since we adopted OIMS in the early 1990s, the system has matured into a valuable tool for preventing environmental incidents.

Our commitment to environmental performance extends to our operations at sea. We use science and technology to develop practical and cost-effective measures to prevent spills. Since 1996, the number of spills from ExxonMobil-operated marine vessels has been reduced by more than 70 percent.

Consistent with safe operating practices and sound economics, we are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are reducing gas flaring and other energy losses through careful monitoring, maintenance, improved equipment reliability and smarter control technology.

We have also installed more than 80 cogeneration facilities worldwide that produce steam and electricity simultaneously. Cogeneration accounts for more than 90 percent of the power-generating capacity at our refineries and chemical plants. It is nearly twice as efficient as traditional methods of steam and power generation and provides significant environmental benefits.

In addition to our in-house programs, ExxonMobil has committed $100 million to Stanford University’s groundbreaking Global Climate and Energy Project. This 10-year alliance of scientific and engineering researchers and leading companies will work to find commercially viable technologies that can substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Good citizens around the world
A successful business can contribute to the well-being of a community by creating jobs, paying taxes and providing products consumers want and need — all of which ExxonMobil does. But good citizenship requires more.

We have long recognized the importance and value of integrity, sound corporate governance and business ethics. We believe they are central to long-term sustainable results. Our approach is straightforward and is reflected in all of our activities.

Some nations where we do business are extremely poor and lack infrastructure. As we pursue our work, we contribute to building local capabilities and improving the local economy. We emphasize the hiring and training of local employees and contractors, who also benefit from the transfer of skills and technology.

We also encourage employees to be active members of the communities where they live and work, and we contribute to charities and institutions that address societal needs.

Financial support comes from the ExxonMobil Foundation and from direct giving by Exxon Mobil Corporation and its affiliates and subsidiaries. In 2002, these contributions totaled nearly $100 million. They helped build roads, schools, medical facilities, and water and sewer systems. They also helped fund health care initiatives and research on major health problems such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.

In addition, ExxonMobil supports improvement of education at every level with annual contributions of more than $40 million. A key component is the ExxonMobil Foundation’s Educational Matching Gifts Program in which it matches contributions to colleges and universities from employees, retirees, surviving spouses and directors on a three-to-one basis.

From how we run our businesses to the ways we invest in achieving a better quality of life around the world, all are part of good corporate citizenship at ExxonMobil.
